If the Mexican Army is unable to establish control of its northern border the insurgency there will spread to California by 2010. The only ingredient the insurgents are lacking to challenge US forces are bomb making skills. What are the other elements favoring insurgents? The deep divisions in California and the US can't be papered over any more. The election of a Democratic majority in Congress hasn't come close to mollifying the left. Then there's the weakness of our central government. After Somalia and Iraq I doubt anyone seriously believes there would be a "Sherman's March" through California. High value targets in California would give insurgents tremendous leverage economically and internationally. Another key point is the probability of achieving an intermediate stage. The intermediate stage is usually some sort of agreement or election that gives insurgents an appearance of legitimacy. Then they install their people in positions of authority to consolidate their power before a final takeover.
It's ironic that many Americans have criticized Saudi Arabia because private citizens have financed jihad organizations. American citizens ave financed Latin American insurgency through drugs and illegal labor. In the Saudi case it's ideologically driven while in the US case it's a matter of corruption. Or is it? Underneath that corruption, are there socialist values, world view, and counter culture? Whatever the motivation there is a natural and logical progression to filling the coffers of thugs.
